Laura’s army feeds 86,000 in lockdown

- BY SALLY HIND

A SCOTS mum who built an army of volunteers to feed the homeless in lockdown has handed out 86,000 meals.

Laura McSorley started Kindness Homeless Street Team with just £5 at the end of 2019, aiming to give food and essential items to the most vulnerable in Glasgow.

When the pandemic hit, her small venture spiralled into a largescale operation.

Now assisted by 60 volunteers, Laura, 37, has handed out tens of thousands of dinners and helped furnish more than 150 properties for some of those they have helped find a home.

Laura, from the city’s Summerston, said: “I can’t believe how much our group has grown.

“I’m so proud of how it started, from walking the streets with sandwiches, building trust and forming relationships, to furnishing some of our friends’ houses and continuing to support them through their journey. The support has been fantastic, from the cooks to the donations.”

In July, we told how the mum of two had received a letter from PM Boris Johnson praising her for providing a “much-needed sense of comfort” to needy Scots and honouring her with a Point of Light award.

About 10,000 online supporters now follow Laura’s initiative and £45,000 has been raised to expand her work.

Laura said: “I couldn’t have done this without Nicola Clyde, who runs our donation centre operation. She’s has been my rock throughout it all.”

The Kindness Homeless Street Team run a soup kitchen in Glasgow’s George Square on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 7pm.

Laura’s premises at 417-419 London Road is open for donations every day except Thursday, from 11am to 2pm.
