Bairns look altitude sick at summit

-

FALKIRK’S lead is now just two points after a 2-1 loss at East Fife where Jack Hamilton headed the winner.

Kevin Smith prodded the hosts ahead after the visiting defence failed to clear a Scott Agnew free-kick but the Bairns levelled two minutes after the restart when Callumn Morrison slotted in.

East Fife keeper Brett Long produced a stunning stop to turn away a closerange Scott Mercer effort before Hamilton forced his way between two defenders to secure the win.

Boss Darren Young said: “Despite this being a very stop-start season for us we have continued to deliver strong results at home.

“This is another one and I am delighted as beating the league leaders should give us confidence for the rest of the season.

“Brett Long made saves at the right times and it was good to see Kevin back on the scoresheet.

“We now have a platform to climb the league especially if we can turn our away form around.”

Former Peterhead hero Rory McAllister grabbed the winner as hosts Cove Rangers saw off nine-man Blue Toon 1-0 to rise up to second.

He looped a header over Joshua Rae from Fraser Fyvie’s free-kick after 90 seconds with Simon Ferry red-carded in 22 minutes for tripping Mitch Megginson.

Steven Boyd was sent off for swearing at ref Peter Stuart early in the second half but the depleted visitors almost grabbed a point through Alan Cook.

Peterhead boss Jim McInally said: “The game has left me with mixed emotions. I never like getting beat but I am proud of the spirit shown by the players out there.

“For the first sending-off there was a foul by Simon however it was a trip, nothing more, and there was another player close by. So I am not sure why it was a red card. The referee seemed to make up his mind really quickly.”

Bottom- of- the- table Forfar blunted hosts Montrose’s hopes of pulling to within a point of top spot by securing a 0-0 draw.

Loons keeper Marc McCallum kept out efforts from Graham Webster, Craig Johnston and Ross Campbell with home shotstopper Allan Fleming equal to a Scott Shepherd effort for the visitors.
