Scots rockers Mogwai at top of the charts

TWENTY-FIVE years after their first release, Mogwai have scored their first UK No1 album.

The Scots rockers led by Stuart Braithwaite claimed their first chart topper with 10th album As The Love Continues.

Famous fans including The Cure’s Robert Smith, Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol and comedian Limmy asked their fans to help get the group to No1.

Stuart said: “It is 25 years since the release of our first single Tuner/Lower, the first release on our own label Rock Action Records.

“We didn’t start the band to get into the charts. None of us envisaged the band or the label being in a position where having a No1 record would be a possibility.

“We started the label with a loan of £400 from my now brother-in-law. Martin’s folks generously helped us out by paying for the studio to record the songs.

“We were just kids that wanted to make an amazing noise and get our record played on John Peel.

“Amazingly John did play the record and one thing led to another to get us to the point we’re at now. It’s been an incredible journey, taking us to places we never dreamed of and getting to play our music to more people than we ever imagined.”

Rapper Ghetts also campaigned for the top spot, taking to London in a tank in a bid to blast his third LP Conflict Of Interest to No1.

Mogwai – Stuart, Dominic Aitchison, Martin Bulloch and Barry Burns – finished the week 2900 sales ahead of Ghetts.
