Midwife ‘shaking in fear’ at her work

- BY STEPHEN STEWART

A DEDICATED midwife has told how she turns up for work shaking with anxiety due to the pandemic.

The Glasgow royal infirmary worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “i work 12-hour shifts. my colleagues and i often work our unpaid breaks and rarely get finished on time.

“This year has been one of the worst i have been through.

“Some days i turn up to work so anxious i am physically shaking before i even walk through the door, frightened at what i will have to face and frightened about the danger i am putting myself and family in.”

She begged health secretary Jeane freeman to continue free parking, which has been extended at three of Scotland’s hospitals until January.

The midwide added: “You will never be able to understand the relief it has been to not have the extra worry and stress of where to park my car during this last year.

“i am a lone female walking to and from my car often in the dark and in adverse weather, in a neighbourhood i wouldn’t choose to walk about alone at night. i suspected i was being followed walking to my car one evening.

“i was so concerned i had to stop at a nursing home and ask their staff to walk me to my car.”

freeman replied that she was considering paying car park owners to continue the free service.

NHS Greater Glasgow and clyde said: “We are sorry this staff member feels so anxious about the parking situation.

“if she has any further concerns, we would encourage her to make use of the support available through NHSGGc.”
