Singer KT: Gig noise hit my hearing

- BY REBEKAH McVEY

SCOTS singer KT Tunstall suffered hearing loss after years of gigs.

She said she was careless about her hearing early in her career and would crank up the volume on amps.

KT, 45, said: “About 10 years ago, I suffered very sudden high-frequency, or top-end, hearing loss and developed constant tinnitus in my left ear.

“I remember the tinnitus being especially hard to deal with at first and it was causing me some depression. But I got used to it and carried on.

“Two years ago, I had another event, which led to me losing my hearing entirely on that side.

“If I could do it all again, I would definitely make sure I was going for regular hearing checks from a young age.”

WOMEN’S Aid threatened legal action after a council became the first in Scotland to withdraw funding because the charity does not work with abusers.

North Lanarkshire Council was accused of taking a “callous step” by cancelling its £350,000 annual payment to three Women’s Aid groups in return for striking a new £1million contract with

Sacro, the offender rehabilitation organisation.

Monklands Women’s Aid, Motherwell District Women’s Aid and North Lanarkshire Women’s Aid all tendered for the contract but failed “as they do not work with perpetrators of violence”.

Dr Marsha Scott, chief executive of Scottish Women’s Aid, said she was “appalled” at the actions of the council, adding that the charity faced “hostility” in tendering processes by North Lanarkshire Council.

The council said Sacro won the tender which “was issued in accordance with procurement regulations for these services”. It added: “It is untrue for Women’s Aid to suggest the council has anything other than the welfare of people who require support in mind.”
