Clark: I love being a top six shooter

- BY SCOTT BURNS

NICKY CLARK knows if Dundee United are to make the top six they’ll have to do it the hard way.

Micky Mellon’s side travel to Rugby Park, well aware three points could be vital as they look to haul in St Mirren.

United follow that with home games against Celtic and Aberdeen.

Clark knows his side will need to be at it before the split, with Saints two points ahead of them

The striker said: “The battle isn’t half heating up.

“It’s been tight for a wee while now, even towards the bottom end.

“It’s our aim to get into the top six, starting this weekend, which is massive. St Mirren drawing against Motherwell opens it up for a few teams. It’s really tight around that area.

“It’s about momentum at this time of the season – winning games, no matter how you do it, grafting and grinding, getting the three points and pulling away from teams around us.

“The draw the other night was probably the best result we could have hoped for. It’s down to us now. We need to perform and get the three points.

“Hopefully we can get that sixth spot.”

Kilmarnock are a team who have dropped down the league like a stone and are only off the bottom on goal difference. They have lost their last eight games but Clark knows that makes the Ayrshiremen even more dangerous.

He said: “Tough games are coming up but I don’t think there are any easy ones in the league.

“Killie will be disappointed with the form they’ve shown and will be desperate to win.

“I’m sure it will be a good game but it doesn’t matter how we get the three points, just so long as we get them.”

Clark is the Terrors’ top scorer but found himself out of the team two weeks in a row before returning in last Sunday’s 4-1 defeat by Rangers at Ibrox.

And he’s delighted the rest of the frontline is now starting to fire, with Lawrence Shankland, Louis Appere and Marc McNulty getting on the goal trail.

The 29-year-old frontman said: “We have got competition with four great strikers at the club, two with international experience and also with young Louis who’s done great when he’s played this season.

“It’s good to have that about the club and hopefully the four of us can score some goals.

“I’ve got to fight for my place. I’ve said before you need that at your club, you need competition for places.”
