You just never know what’s around corner

Lewis: We’re back on track but it might not be enough to catch Hibs in third

LEWIS FERGUSON believes Aberdeen have now turned the corner in terms of performances.

But the Reds ace knows that any hopes of hauling back Hibs in the chase for third spot is a situation out of their hands.

Ferguson and his team battled hard against Celtic at the weekend, but failed to score for the seventh time in eight matches as they went down 1-0 to their hosts at Parkhead.

Despite the loss and failing to find the net in Glasgow, the Pittodrie outfit scrapped until the end on the back of a muchneeded win over Kilmarnock the previous week.

Midfielder Ferguson is sure displays are getting better and said: “We went through a bad spell of not getting results and not performing well.

“We have turned that corner in the last few weeks.

“We won against Kilmarnock and the performance was decent and it was decent again against Celtic, although it was not good enough to win, so we still have to get better.

“I do think we did go through a bad spell where it was bad performances that was losing us games. Against Celtic, there was a bit of luck involved.

“We have turned a corner and just have to keep going until the end of the season.”

Ferguson insists senior figures within the dressing room have been key to lifting spirits through tough times as he continued: “It is hard to keep your confidence high when you are losing games. Everyone will tell you that.

“It comes from something deep within yourself to try and bring that out and to try to spread it to the other boys in the dressing room.

“If you are going through a bad spell you need a bit of confidence.

“I thought we did that. Our more experienced players throughout the squad did that and it has helped us. I am just looking forward to getting as many points as possible and the gaffer said after the game [at Parkhead] to take the mentality that we showed, the effort and commitment. That determination we showed.

“Although we showed that in the first half, I thought Celtic controlled it to a point. It is about aggression, getting tight to your men and pinning them back.

“Making it uncomfortable for them, and we have done that twice in the second half now. While we are 1-0 down we need to keep them out at the back.

“If we can do that and keep a clean sheet we will cause them problems.” Dons and boss Derek McInnes are concentrating on their own performances, but there was one consolation from the weekend after Hibs were beaten by Motherwell.

That shock win for Well at Easter Road ensured Aberdeen lost no more ground in the chase for third.

McInnes’ men are four points behind the Leith outfit having played a game more and Ferguson accepts the situation is now out of their control, due to the lack of games left and with only one more meeting between the sides after the top-six split.

But the Pittodrie ace is adamant his team will keep battling until the end and said: “It is not really down to us at the minute. Hibs are obviously in control of that so it is down to them and whether they want to get that spot or not. We can just do all we can as we are pushing as hard as possible.

“We obviously want that and that was in our sights at the start of the season. It is still our aim, but it is not in our hands at the minute.

“We have plenty of games to go and if we can pick up as many points as we want then you never know. It might get us that third spot.”
