Gunners do ever so Vell

-

EDINBURGH have signed scrum-half Ben Vellacott from Wasps.

The 25-year-old former Scotland youth star said: “I’m really excited about joining Edinburgh.”

Gunners boss Richard Cockerill added: “Ben’s speed, speed of thought and speed of ball make him a real threat.”

JAMES McPAKE saw Dundee get back to winning ways – then admitted he was glad Caley Thistle made it hard for them.

The Dens boss was under pressure following a run of two defeats and two draws in their last four Championship games.

First-half goals from Max Anderson and Jason Cummings helped move Dundee up to fourth, but only after Caley made them sweat.

Sub Nikolay Todorov pulled one back in the 75th minute and McPake said: “It is weird, and I hate saying this as it sounds daft but in a strange way I am glad they got a goal because we showed character at the end to defend.

“So I am pleased with my players. I just thought to a man we were excellent.

“When we settled into the game we were really good and we showed real quality.”

The Dens men, still without talisman Charlie Adam following his positive Covid test, started well and Declan McDaid’s longrange effort forced a good save from Mark Ridgers.

But the Caley keeper was beaten on 10 minutes when Paul McMullan

crossed from the right and 19-year-old Anderson kept his cool to score his first goal for the club on the follow up after Ridgers blocked his initial effort.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, the ball broke to Cummings six yards out and he fired past the helpless goalie.

Caley had a great chance to pull a goal back in the 56th minute when Miles Storey raced clear but, with his defenders screaming for offside, Dundee keeper Jack Hamilton saved from the striker at his near post.

However, Hamilton was beaten in the 75th minute.

Cameron Harper swung a cross in from the left and Todorov sent a powerful header into the net.

The Inverness men pushed for a leveller but Dundee put up the shutters and held out.

Disappointed Neil McCann, Caley’s interim boss while John Robertson is on compassionate leave, said: “We didn’t deserve anything from the game.

“We were second to every ball in the first 45 minutes.”
