BLAIR Drummond Safari Park has announced it will reopen on Saturday.

The wildlife park, near Stirling, has been closed since December. But it is set to welcome visitors again after the Scottish Government outlined the route map out of numbers over the last week are a hard reminder that the virus hasn’t magically disappeared.

“We don’t yet have that critical mass of the population vaccinated to start really bearing down on transmission.”

If people begin to loosen their adherence to the rules, she said, the “hopeful” path out of lockdown set out on Tuesday would become more doubtful.

She said Scotland had recorded 12 deaths from coronavirus and 625 positive tests in the past 24 hours.

The daily test positivity rate is three per cent, down from 3.8 per cent on the previous day.

There are 422 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 18 in 24 hours, and 38 patients are in intensive care, a fall of four.

Sturgeon, who repeated that air travel lockdown. The park will only be open to local residents initially, in line with Level 3 lockdown restrictions. Gary would be banned until May 17 and “likely it won’t be possible for a period after that”, said she was due to speak with the aviation sector this week.

But she pointed to the example of Europe, where the “picture is not as rosy” with Covid infections continuing to rise across several EU states, where the vaccine roll-out has been slower.

She said: “All of us want to have every aspect of life back to normal, for the benefits of individual freedoms as well as the importance of international travel to our economy.

“While we see lots of signs here in Scotland and across the UK, the picture is not as rosy in many other parts of the world, including some parts of Europe where we are starting to see some increase in the virus. We have to be cautious.”

Gilmour, general manager at the park, said: “Visitors will notice lots of measures in place. The safety of our visitors, staff and animals is our highest priority.”
