MICKY CHASES SILVER LINING

-

MICKY MELLON is delighted the Scottish Cup is being played this season because it gives Dundee United another crack at silverware and Europe.

There was a major doubt over the competition being completed due to Covid-19 call-offs but the SFA have managed to work the competition in to the end of the league campaigns.

It keeps the season alive for so many teams as they can still come away with a trophy, with the winners also guaranteed Europa League football.

The Dundee United boss said: “I’m delighted it’s back on. It’s a tournament you want to be involved in and to do well in. It’s always a challenge because all the teams want to do well in it.

“I have never been involved in the Scottish Cup so that will be another first for me.

“The Cup means so much to everybody. We will go and attack it, give it our best shot and see where it takes us.”

Mellon accepts a Euro return has to be a target for his club – sooner rather than later. He said: “Everybody wants to win the Cup and play in Europe. It’s difficult because the big two are two unbelievable clubs competing against you all the time.

“We all take it on and have a go at it. It will be the same in the Scottish Cup – the prize is massive and we know it is a long way away but it would be great to get Dundee United back in Europe again.

“That’s definitely one of the things the club will be looking to do somewhere down the line.

“A club the size of United, if it keeps moving forward and progressing the way it is, would like to be in among those prizes.”
