Gaz: We can manage a Ton-around

- BY ALAN MARSHALL

MORTON have not been short on managers this season but striker Gary Oliver insists it’s points that matter as they look to move away from relegation trouble.

Gus MacPherson is their third boss since David Hopkin stood down in December to ease cash-flow worries.

Assistant Anton McElhone replaced Hopkin before former St Mirren manager MacPherson was handed the reins on March 10, with a losing start at Dunfermline last week.

Ahead of today’s visit by Queen of the South, Oliver said: “It’s a new slate for the boys, you want to impress and get in that team.

“We’ve got 20 first-team players all trying to play. The intensity has gone up in training and everyone is looking good.

“When a manager signs you and then leaves and then another one comes in and leaves, it’s not ideal but football can change so fast.”

Ton are looking over their shoulder – but are also only five points adrift of the top four. And Oliver added: “That’s how tight the league is, a few wins can take you right up the top and a few defeats can leave you right down the bottom.

“We need to get consistency, a few wins and I’m sure we’ll be push up the table. We’re not looking at the play-offs, we’re looking at one game at a time and seeing where that takes us.

“If we win on Saturday we’re only two behind Queen of the South so that shows you how close it is.”

Queens, who had been on a four-game winning run, are looking for a response after their 3-2 defeat by Alloa.

No.2 Sandy Clark said: “It’s how we react. We’re more than capable of going to Morton and getting three points.”
