PROVEYOU AREWORTH NEWDEALS

- BY ALISON MCCONNELL

TOMMY WRIGHT has told the bulk of the Kilmarnock squad they’re playing for their livelihoods as the club face a battle to stay in the top flight.

With an incredible 17 players out of contract this summer, Wright has cautioned that they need to be proving they are worth another deal – either at Kilmarnock or elsewhere.

The manager said: “They’re playing for their futures. Whether that be here or somewhere else it is important that they do everything they can to get a contract. Playing well and doing well and keeping Kilmarnock up will help them on that front.”

Killie host Motherwell today with Wright optimistic a win would be the catalyst to start the drive away from the foot of the table.

Wright insisted the players appreciate just how stark their situation is as they sit a point behind Accies. He added: “I am preparing them as I would as if we were going for top six. Ultimately the players know that over a long period of time they haven’t done the basics well enough.

“They are an honest enough group to know that so it is about giving them that support and hopefully they improve enough that they get enough belief to go and win games.

“I don’t think they are down in confidence but a win would certainly give them more of it. We need to start winning. We’re realists and know that.

“When you’re on a run like this one and you haven’t had a good season sometimes it can lead to an acceptance of what’s going to happen but I haven’t really seen that from these players.

“We’ve still to transfer what we do Monday and Friday into 90-minute performances and – when we’ve been asked questions which I feel we should deal with – we’ve come up short.”
