Joe wants a win to avoid a nervy wait
JOE SHAUGHNESSY wants to help steer St Mirren to victory today and avoid a nervous wait to discover if other results have gone their way.
The Buddies skipper endured an anxious afternoon at Rugby Park while a St Johnstone player as, following a 3-0 defeat, they waited to find out if they’d still managed to make the top six.
So he’s desperate to avoid a repeat by winning for the Buddies against Hamilton this afternoon.
Shaughnessy said: “In my first year at St Johnstone we played Kilmarnock in our last game before the split and got beaten 3-0. We didn’t get the job done but results went our way and we still ended up top six.
“Our goal difference was better than those around us but when it went to 3-0 I started to get worried. As soon as we walked off the kitman told us Dundee and Partick Thistle had also lost and there was a huge sense of relief.
“Those kind of experiences are good for you. It stands me in good stead going into this weekend. I can talk to other players who’ve not been in this situation before.
“It’s nice to be in a place where it’s all in our hands.”
Shaughnessy insists the winning mentality of the players brought in by Saints last summer have helped drive them on.
He said: “When I was talking to the manager it was clear he didn’t want to be at a club that was just happy to finish 10th then go again for that the next year.
“The other signings all had good league experience and I was convinced we’d a good chance of making the top six.”
