Chippie in superhero mascot light ban

- BY CATH ASHCROFT

A FISH and chip shop owner banned from shining a superherostyle light into the sky to attract customers is taking her fight to the Scottish government.

Jaki Pickett applied for permission use her powerful spotlight to promote her takeaway in the village of Muir of Ord in the Highlands.

But Highland Council planners refused to give Jaki consent, claiming the beam would cause light pollution in the rural area.

She came up with her plan after designing a deep-fried superhero called Batterman as part of a publicity drive at the Jaki Fish and Chip Shop.

Just like Gotham’s famous signal, she wanted to send the

light 15 miles into the sky with coloured beams to alert customers to offers.

Jaki has appealed to the Scottish Government after her bid was rejected by the council.

She said: “I find the whole thing hypocritical. Highland Council lit up Inverness Castle and even used 15 lights on the Kessock Bridge that were made by the same company that sold me the light. I’m only six miles from Inverness as the crow flies, so if my light would impinge on rural areas, so do the lights they’re using. It is double standards.

“If the council wants us stuck in the 1960s, using candlelight, that’s up to them but I think we should be moving into the 21st century.”
