It’s open and shunt case raps Russell
FURIOUS George Russell asked Valtteri Bottas if he was “trying to kill them both” after their 200mph crash at Imola.
Lewis Hamilton emerged from the carnage at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to finish second behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and lead F1’s world championship by a point.
However, it was Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Bottas who was involved in the scariest moment of the race after a huge shunt involving Russell’s Williams.
After the cars came to a halt, Russell marched over to the Merc with Bottas strapped in the cockpit.
Asked what he had said, Russell revealed: “I asked him if he was trying to kill us both.
“The faintest of movements when you’re travelling at 200mph is quite a massive thing. It’s a gentlemen’s agreement between the drivers.”
Having dropped to ninth moments before the crash after sliding into a gravel trap, Hamilton capitalised on the race being stopped.
He said: “On my side it was not the greatest of days. First time I’ve made a mistake in a long time.”
