Plea to keep steel import defences up
STEEL chiefs are today urging the Government to extend safeguards aimed at supporting the industry against cheap imports.
Measures have been in place since 2018 when the UK was part of the EU, and were extended as part of the Brexit transition period.
But they expire next month, prompting fears of a flood of foreign metal.
UK Steel believes the US and EU will extend their safeguards and wants the UK to do the same.
In a three-page briefing note, the trade body says the move is “the only sensible course of action”.
Roy Rickhuss of the Community Union said it was “inconceivable” to leave the UK steel sector unprotected while the EU and US maintain defences.
