He must go if he’s broken the code
BORIS Johnson should resign if he is found to have broken the ministerial code over the funding for his flat, Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross has said.
Ross broke ranks over the investigation into the “cash for curtains” Downing Street refurb.
He told the BBC: “There are currently three investigations under way in terms of what the Prime Minister has done and issues around that and I think it’s right that we look to have serious questions answered.”
Asked whether the PM should resign if he’s found to have broken the rules, Ross said: “Of course… I think people expect the highest standards of those in the highest office of the land. And that’s why I think people are looking at the investigations that are ongoing and waiting for the answers to be heard.” But Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told Sky News: “The Prime Minister is the ultimate arbiter of the ministerial code. He has the authority to dismiss ministers, to make sure they live up to the code.
“So if your question is then ‘who holds him to account’, ultimately there’s no separate body or individual that will have power over him. It’s the British people, he’s accountable to them, that’s why we have elections.”
But while he defended the PM, he declined to say whether he should resign if he is found to have broken the law.
