Petrov: I expected more fight from Celts

- BY DAVID McCARTHY

FORMER Celtic hero Stiliyan Petrov couldn’t believe John Kennedy’s men delivered yet another lacklustre Old Firm display to deny their fans a sliver of hope for next season.

The Bulgarian midfielder, analysing the game for Sky Sports, reckons it was the same old story of the Parkhead side failing to deal with crosses into the box and not matching Gers’ desire to win the match.

Petrov said: “What I saw all through the game, especially in the second half, was Rangers were comfortable. They were just strolling, just waiting for it, and I believe even if they’d conceded, they’d have gone on and scored again.

“We talk about Celtic and the basics that make a difference. They weren’t doing them.

“Rangers looked sharper and were more up for the game. They were doing the right things, pushing harder and they wanted that win more than Celtic. It has been the same story throughout the season.

“Look at Rangers’ crosses. Celtic haven’t been able to deal with them all season.

“People talk about systems and the way you play but if you are not stopping crosses you are giving someone the opportunity to close the door on you.

“If you are giving them the opportunity to stop the ball, have a look and then deliver the ball as he (Barisic) does then you are inviting strikers to go and attack it. This is something that Celtic failed to deal with throughout the game.

“I expected to see more fight. I’m a former player and I’m looking to say positive things but you just can’t.

“The people who make decisions have to make the right decisions to challenge Rangers next season.

“It’s a huge job. If Celtic and the fans think they will bring in a manager who has time to rebuild and work on a certain philosophy, they are wrong. They need success straight away.”
