Watchdog investigates sir’s inappropriate relationship with then-teen schoolgirl
AN RE teacher is to be investigated by an education watchdog over an “inappropriate” relationship with a schoolgirl he later wed.
Gavin Dunsmuir, 49, was Megan Reid’s “mentor” and is said to have visited a pub with her and let her spend time with his daughter.
Dunsmuir left his wife and wed the-now 23-year-old this year. They have two kids.
A full hearing will decide this month on his fitness to teach.
A TEACHER is facing a probe by an education watchdog over claims he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a pupil who is now his wife.
Gavin Dunsmuir is accused of becoming too close to Megan Reid while working as a religious education teacher at Largs Academy in Ayrshire.
The 49-year-old was allegedly seen visiting a pub with the schoolgirl and other youngsters between March and August in 2015.
He is also accused of taking the-then teenager to a colleague’s house and allowing her to spend time in the company of his daughter.
Dunsmuir, from Kilmarnock, left his wife and set up home with Megan, now 23, who was reportedly expecting his child in March 2018.
The couple, who have a 26-year age gap, wed this year and now have two children together.
The General Teaching Council for Scotland will also hear evidence that Dunsmuir allegedly had non-consensual sex with a child on two occasions between 1991 and 1993. His behaviour involving Megan, who he “mentored” at the school, will also be examined to determine if he is fit to remain in the profession.
A probe examining Dunsmuir’s conduct began in 2018 but never concluded.
Former colleagues gave evidence against the teacher, who was not present or represented, where they expressed concerns about how close he was with Megan.
Suspicions were raised after an off-duty teacher saw them “looking like a couple” at the Lounge bar in Largs. The same person also reported seeing Megan sitting with Dunsmuir alone “on a daily basis”.
A second colleague told the hearing that he was “speechless” after Dunsmuir turned up at his house with Megan in the car.
When he challenged Dunsmuir, the teacher told him he planned to use the teenager as a babysitter for his daughter.
The Kilmarnock man’s wife also became aware of the alleged relationship when her daughter told her that her then-husband had a girlfriend.
She told the school and North Ayrshire Council who confirmed that Dunsmuir no longer worked for them. He is currently subject to a temporary restriction order by the GTCS.
The full hearing is scheduled to take place between July 26-30, when his fitness to practise will be decided.
