SAINTS SWITCH RIGHT FOR ME

- BY BEN RAMAGE

SCOTT TANSER admits his move from St Johnstone to St Mirren will raise eyebrows – but insists it was the right option for his career.

The wing-back was on the bench as the Perth Saints lifted two cups, but opted against playing his part in the defence of them and a crack at the Europa League to join Jim Goodwin’s Paisley men.

Tanser, 26, said: “After the two cup wins I did think to myself ‘where do I go from here?’.

“St Johnstone were doing well but I wanted to be a first-choice player.

“Having competition for places is good but for me to progress I need to play week in and week out.

“They could not guarantee that. I’d been in talks with the manager here since January.

“He is one of the main reasons I’m here as we had some great chats and I think it is perfect for me.

“A few people asked why I was leaving St Johnstone after two cup wins and a top-six finish. I understand where they are coming from, but from a players’ point of view it is a different picture.

“Two cups wins is great but personally you have to think when you are going to play and how much game time you will get.

“No one wants to sit on the bench all of the time and the manager at St Johnstone couldn’t guarantee me anything.

“Callum Booth came in and did well leading up to the finals and he played in both. I felt he’d be first choice, so thought it was better to go elsewhere.

“I hope to help St Mirren push on this year. We’d love to bring a trophy back to Paisley.”
