Reality shows are a big turn off, they are so fake

Presenter Gemma Hunt, 39, reveals why she’s not a fan of Big Brother and which movie she never tires of watching...

- Gemma Hunt

What’s your favourite TV show?

I’ve been watching Ugly Betty on Disney+. It came out in 2009 and I remember watching it on DVD 10 years ago. I never finished the series, so I was delighted when I saw it on there. It’s got some really beautiful storylines.

Would you call yourself a binge-watcher?

I try not to because I find it quite overwhelming when you’re so obsessed with one show and keep watching to see what happens. So I do try to pace myself. But I have been known to watch two or three episodes on a quiet afternoon.

Do you ever watch yourself back on TV?

Yeah, I find it really helpful. I’m my biggest critic when it comes to being on TV. And so it’s helpful to see what the viewers are seeing. And if I think there are any nuances or things that I do that are not helpful or irritating, then I try to improve on my appearances, so I can constantly evolve as a presenter.

Any TV turn offs?

I’m not the biggest fan of reality TV shows. I don’t watch Love Island or Big Brother. I remember when Big Brother first came out and thinking it was quite intriguing as it was a new concept for TV. But now, I really don’t like it as it’s become so much more fake and engineered. I don’t want to believe it is a true representation of reality.

Do you have a favourite soap?

I haven’t watched soaps in years. My mum and my nan would have the TV on from five in the afternoon until eight as they would watch everything. From Neighbours and Home and Away to EastEnders, Coronation Street and Holby City. They still watch them all to this day and I did when I lived at home. But after moving out when I was 18, I stopped following the storylines.

Is there a film you never tire of watching?

Absolutely. It has to be Sister Act. I could watch it over and over again. I have been known to laugh and cry at the same scene every single time. I will never get bored of that movie. I love Whoopi Goldberg’s performance so much.

You’re working on a campaign for Belvoir’s elderflower water…

‘I watch Sister Act over and over. I laugh and cry at same scene every time’

It’s been a fantastic campaign to work on. It gives everybody an opportunity to get out and enjoy the great outdoors before having a lovely, refreshing drink.
