110-year-old great gran’s final farewell

- BY DANYA BAZARAA

ONE of Britain’s oldest people has died aged 110.

Amy Hawkins was a former dancer who toured with her troupe before settling into shop work.

During World War II the great-gran served as a fire-watcher.

Amy was the oldest person in Wales when she died aged 110 years and 228 days. She was the sixth oldest person in Britain.

Her daughter Rosemary Morris, born in 1947, said: “She was a lovely lady who dedicated her life to me as her daughter.”

Amy grew up in Newport and married sign writer George Hawkins in 1937.

He died in 1996 and she spent her final years in a Monmouth farmhouse with Rosemary, son-in-law Robert and grandchildren Tamzin and Hannah.
