Tesco keeps its shoppers in the Loops

- BY RUKI SAYID

TESCO is extending its Loop refillable-containers scheme from online-only purchases to real stores.

Customers buying a range of products from ketchup to cashew nuts pay a deposit of 20p to £5.

The deposit is refunded when the empties are returned to the store.

Loops cleans the containers. Each one is used at least 10 times.

Ken Murphy, Tesco chief executive, said the scheme includes 88 product lines.

He added: “We are determined to tackle plastic waste.”

Rival Morrisons has pledged to have six “zero waste” stores by 2025.

If the scheme in Edinburgh is successful, it plans to extend it to all of its 498 supermarkets in 2026.
