Glass says Aberdeen critics are way off the mark

- BY SCOTT BURNS

STEPHEN GLASS is in no doubt his under-fire Aberdeen side will come good and silence their critics.

The Dons haven’t won in the last six games and that is something they will be keen to address when St Johnstone come calling this weekend.

Glass knows more is expected from Aberdeen than other clubs.

They have crashed out of Europe and the Premier Sports Cup but the gaffer points out they have only lost one game in the Premiership – to Motherwell last weekend.

Glass said: “It is strange that we are in a league campaign where we have only played five games and we are being told it is six games without a win.

“There is a balance to be had. There were European games in there, a heavy schedule of games, and that took a little bit of a toll on us physically.

“The focus is to try to get another three points in the league and not to look back and listen to outside noise.

“We lost our first game in the league at the weekend and if we continue to win games then we will be alright.

“The performance levels have been very good and we trust the players here.

“We trust them and believe in what we are doing so we believe they will come good.”

Glass is bedding in players and doesn’t think his team got what they deserved over the last six games, which included two losses to Qarabag and a cup shock at Raith as well as that Well defeat and draws with Hearts and Ross County. He does accept, however, they need to become more clinical.

The Dons boss said: “The last two league games we had huge amounts of the game but didn’t do enough to score.

“When other teams counterattacked we also didn’t defend well enough.

“The Qarabag games. Difficult to go to Azerbaijan and I think any Scottish team would go there and struggle.

“Over here they were brilliant and were better than us which I acknowledged on the night.

“Raith Rovers away we were in total control for 45 minutes and I don’t think anyone at the game would think we were in trouble.

“Then we didn’t react when it became a cup tie.

“At Hearts away teams have gone there and been beaten as it is a difficult place to go.

“We showed resilience and fight. If you go to Tynecastle and pick up a point having been a goal behind and having arrived back from Azerbaijan at half-past-six on Friday morning, it ain’t a bad point.

“From outside no wins in six – from inside we believe in what we are doing.”

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander has also had a pop at Glass, saying his call for Kevin van Veen to be sent off was a smokescreen to deflect from their Fir Park loss. But the Aberdeen gaffer said: “I don’t need to get involved in tit-for-tat comments with other managers.

“What he thinks about his team and what I think about our team.

“You don’t go to Motherwell and have 70 per cent of the ball if you have actually not played OK.

“The second time they went up the pitch they scored a goal.

“We suffered as a result and we weren’t good enough ourselves with the amount of ball we had.

“That gets you down the line of talking about the referee.

“Graham can look after his team as he sees fit – I am fine with that, no problem at all.”

Assistant manager Allan Russell got sent off after the match at Motherwell last week. He has accepted a one-match ban and Glass admits all his management have to keep more of a lid on things.

Glass, who also played down Everton’s link with Calvin Ramsay, confirmed: “We’ve accepted a one-game ban. We weren’t happy with the officiating last week.”

We believe in what we are doing and trust in the players to come good STEPHEN GLASS HAS TOTAL FAITH IN PITTODRIE SQUAD
