Leaders united in sadness
Scots politicians tell of their shock over the killing of MP
NICOLA Sturgeon led Scottish tributes to David Amess after the Southend MP was stabbed to death.
The First Minister said politicians from across all parties would be “united in sadness and shock”.
All Scottish parties have suspended campaigning this weekend as a mark of respect.
The SNP leader tweeted: “This is awful, beyond words.
“My thoughts and deepest condolences are with David’s family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.”
She added: “Elected representatives from across the political spectrum will be united in sadness and shock today.
“In a democracy, politicians must be accessible and open to scrutiny but no-one deserves to have their life taken while working for and representing their constituents.”
Ian Blackford, the SNP’s Westminster leader, said: “Sir David was a thoroughly decent man who was well-liked across parties and the House of Commons.
“All of us are appalled at this barbaric attack, which was as senseless as it was cowardly. He was murdered while simply doing his job.
“In recent years, we have seen increasingly unacceptable levels of abuse and intimidation aimed at MPs, parliamentary staff and public figures. At its worst, this has resulted in violent attacks on multiple MPs and the murder of Jo Cox and now Sir David Amess.
“All of us are united in sadness and in calling for an end to this abuse, intimidation and violence. It is a threat to our democracy – and it has to stop.”
Douglas Ross, the Scottish Conservatives’ leader, said: “This is truly horrific news.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Sir David, his family and his staff at this awful time.”
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: “Horrified and saddened to hear the news about David Amess. The entire Scottish Labour family sends love and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Alex Cole-Hamilton, the Scottish Lib Dem leader, said: “Sir David was killed offering help to constituents. It is the most important job we do and should be allowed to continue in safety.”
