We visit our local farmers market

-

I YEARN for a sleep-in at weekends but I’m up at 7am whatever day it is, because the children burst into our bedroom for a snuggle. While Mike and I have a cup of tea, the kids chat about what the day will bring.

Saturdays begin by taking Gatsby for a walk and a spot of puppy training. We’re lucky because there are lots of green spaces where we live in London.

Mid morning, we’ll often visit our local farmers’ market and treat the kids to a pain au chocolat. It’s a working day for me, so after lunch I cycle into the BBC newsroom for 3pm, while Mike takes the kids swimming. As soon as I arrive, I discuss the running order and lead headlines with the editor and producers, then write my script.

Once I’ve finished at 11pm, I’m usually buzzing with adrenaline so the cycle home helps me to decompress.

On Sunday mornings, we usually take Wilbur to rugby before going for a long walk. Sunday lunch at home has to be roast chicken with Yorkshire puds, rounded off with apple crumble. The kids like to help me prepare.

After lunch, we’ll go through the kids’ reading assignments before curling up to watch a family movie. We all get to choose what we watch. With Wilbur, it’s inevitably Star Wars-related. With Clemency, it’s anything about dogs or horses.

The kids normally go to bed at 7pm but it creeps and creeps. We’re trying to instil more discipline so that Mike and I can squeeze in our own telly time.

We’re aiming to get to bed earlier because I have so many brilliant books I want to read.

But I’m usually so exhausted that I’m out like a light.
