Max tells pals to relax after Honest win

- Stuart Wilson

JAMES MAXWELL insists Ayr won’t let derby fever go to their heads.

United face Killie a week on Tuesday under the Somerset Park lights in a hotly-anticipated clash.

But Rangers loan star Maxwell says they’re only focused on the trip to Arbroath this Saturday.

He said: “The Kilmarnock game is more for the fans right now getting excited.

“Arbroath are a very good team and we saw that when they played here earlier in the season.

“For us it’s one game at a time and we can only look at Saturday. If we take our eye off it we’ll be beaten up there and we won’t allow that to happen.”

Maxwell was pivotal in Ayr’s turnaround as they came from behind to down Queens. Following Lee Connelly’s opener, he won a penalty that was converted by Aaron Muirhead before lashing home the winner.

The 19-year-old said: “The first half was pretty terrible

but sometimes you just have to dig in. We got a wee bit lucky to go in 0-0 at half time but the second half was much better.

“The last game against Partick where we lost 4-0 was our worst performance of the season so it was good to get a reaction. Hopefully we take that into Arbroath.”

Ayr had to ride their luck as Queens dominated the first half and passed up a number of chances.

Alex Cooper, Willie Gibson and Innes Cameron all went close before Cameron hit the bar with a header.

Ruben Soares Junior missed a sitter before Queens edged ahead with a smart finish from Connelly. Ayr refused to lie down and staged their late fightback.

Queens loan striker Cameron said: “It’s just my second game but it was good to get 90 minutes in the tank. I’m relishing it.”
