County must start to win mind games

- ALASDAIR FRASER

DAVID CANCOLA reckons Ross County’s current struggle is MENTAL – with the team reacting badly to setbacks during matches.

The Staggies are still chasing a first league win of the season and slipped to the foot of the Premiership table on Saturday after a 3-2 home defeat to St Mirren.

Malky Mackay’s side created a host of chances with 20 attempts during the 90 minutes, while dominating good parts of the second half.

But mistakes led to what Mackay described as “horror goals” in the first half, leaving the Highlanders with a mountain to climb.

Cancola, the Austrian midfielder signed from Slovan Liberec in the summer, insists there is more than enough ability in the squad to turn a corner.

The 24-year-old said: “It was very disappointing. We did make it hard for ourselves.

“I felt we were in the game really well at the beginning and then we conceded the first goal. It set it in our minds that we were losing again and we just needed to get that out of our heads.

“I’ve been in this situation before and the only thing that gets you out of this is believing in our plan and believing in ourselves as a team.

He added: “Sometimes, we all know there are teams where it just doesn’t feel like they have enough quality. That’s definitely not the case in our team.

“I can feel it every time we train, and in every game, that we have the quality to play a lot better and get a lot better results than we’re getting right now.

“It is all mental. We still have this positive mindset and that’s why I’m super confident it is not going to be long until we turn it around.”
