Martinez’s a huge Losa on return home

SPAIN ........... 8 SCOTLAND ...... 0

PEDRO MARTINEZ LOSA said it is “not a moment to be ashamed” despite seeing Scotland women ship eight in his homeland.

And the only thing that could be said about the Seville showdown was that 8-0 did not flatter Spain.

The home side had buried 88 goals in 15 games and hadn’t conceded any before kick-off in this World Cup qualifying clash.

Even so, Losa’s side will feel the effects of this one for some time.

The Spaniard said: “We have one loss in the whole qualification round and we are still in the race to qualify. What do I say to the players? I believe in them.

“It is not a moment to be ashamed. We are playing against a team who are at the highest team in the world.

“It is time to go to their families, clubs, to prepare for Christmas and enjoy it, and then come back in February with more energy.”

Abi Harrison battered an effort off the crossbar early on but it proved to be a solitary moment of hope on a long night at the hands of the slick Spaniards.

Amaiur Sarriegi Isasa, Mariona Caldentey Oliver and Aitana Bonmati sent them in three up.

The roof came in on Scotland in a devastating six-minute period in the second half when another three goals were shipped.

Defender Sophie Howard dawdled inside her own six-yard box rather than hoof clear and Sarriegi Isasa stroked home.

Bonmati netted her second and Spain’s fifth with Lee Alexander twice beating away efforts before netting at the third attempt.

Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas met a cutback, Jennifer Hermoso pounced on slack Scots possession on the edge of their box and Esther Gonzalez got No.8.
