TEARS OF JOY

Mum’s hope as cancer battler Lily is accepted for miracle drug trial

- BY SARAH VESTY

THE family of brave teenager Lily Douglas shed “tears of joy” after learning she had been accepted for a new cancer drug trial.

The inspirational 14-year-old has been battling Ewing sarcoma since 2017 and has had numerous rounds of gruelling treatment.

She was dealt a devastating blow in October when she learned her the most recent treatment had stopped working despite a positive start.

But now her family, from Perthshire, have learned she’ll be trying a new drug.

Mum Jane, 52, said: “We don’t know much about it, just that it’s quite a new trial which is really exciting news.

“We’re also not sure if it’ll be a tablet or an infusion but we’re hoping to find out really soon.

“You always worry that they’re going to tell you there’s nothing else they can do because she’s relapsed so many times.

“But they have got her a place on this trial and we’re just so excited and praying that it works.

“We think it’ll be in Newcastle but it’s not been confirmed.”

Jane added: “With the last trial, where she took tablets every day, her doctor couldn’t believe what it did for her.

“She said she had never seen such a good reaction because it really did shrink a lot of her tumours. But unfortunately it stopped working because the body finds a way around it.

“We like to stay positive and just have our fingers crossed that it works.”

Lily has a small army of celebrity supporters including Lewis Capaldi and Dame Arlene Phillips. She was named Teenager of Courage at the Pride of Scotland awards this year.

The Record told yesterday how Lily was “over the moon” when Arlene praised her during her I’m A Celebrity exit interview.

The ex-Strictly judge told Ant & Dec Lily was one of her inspirations for going on the show and hailed her as “one of the bravest, most fearless girls”.
