UK’s pledge over £400m debt to Iran

- BY RECORD REPORTER

BRITAIN “wants to pay” a £400million debt to Iran linked to Nazanin ZaghariRatcliffe’s detention, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said yesterday.

Her family have reportedly been told by Iranian authorities she is being detained because of the UK’s failure to cough up for tanks in the 70s.

Britain did not honour the deal because of the overthrow of the Shah.

Truss told the Chatham House foreign affairs think tank: “We do want to pay this debt. We recognise it’s legitimate but there are lots of issues.”

The minister said she was “pressing for unfairly detained British nationals”.

Mum-of-one Nazanin, 43, has been held in Iran since 2016 and has always denied spying charges.
