1000 HAVE NO POWER IN BARRA BLACKOUT

Engineers battle to get services running

-

ABOUT 1000 homes are still without power after Storm Barra swept across Scotland.

More power cuts came just days after properties were reconnected following Storm Arwen, which had caused “catastrophic damage” to electricity networks, mainly in the north-east of Scotland and affected 135,000 properties.

The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings yesterday as Storm Barra brought high winds, heavy rain and snow.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said about 1000 customers remained without power in the north of Scotland, with 700 in Grampian.

It has restored power to more than 8000 customers and engineers are working to reconnect the rest.

SSEN said it hoped to reconnect all affected customers as soon as possible.

A SSEN spokesman said: “Our teams are working hard to restore supplies to our impacted customers and expect to reconnect all customers impacted by Storm Barra later today.

“We are working closely with our local resilience partners to provide support to our priority service register customers and gain access to faults blocked by heavy snow and fallen trees.”

More rain was forecast in some areas yesterday and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency issued 11 flood alerts and three flood warnings.

There was disruption to rail and ferry services, and three schools in Aberdeenshire were closed. Ferry firm CalMac said amended timetables will operate on some routes.
