LOAN KIDS MUST BE GLASS ACT TO PLAY

- BY SCOTT BURNS

STEPHEN GLASS insists Aberdeen made it crystal clear there would be no first-team guarantees for Matty Longstaff or Teddy Jenks before they arrived at Pittodrie on loan.

The pair have had limited game time for the Dons this term and Glass stated Premier League parent clubs were both well aware their young proteges would need to fight for first-team football in the Granite City.

Midfielder Jenks, sent north by Brighton for the season, has had more exposure. But Newcastle midfielder Longstaff hasn’t even been stripped for this month’s wins over Livingston and St Mirren amid a suggestion the St James’ Park side could recall him in January. The

Dons also have striker Austin Samuels from Wolves with an option to buy at the end of the campaign. Glass said: “We constantly speak to their loan managers.

“There’s a recognition these are young players coming to compete in a decent team here.

“It’s part of learning. It’s no different from our own young players – they need to earn the right to play.”

Glass hailed Longstaff, who has done extra work on his own to try to get back into his plans. The Pittodrie gaffer added: “Matty’s attitude has been brilliant. He is still competing to be in this group until January, then we’ll see where we are.”
