as the clear favourite to take over – but Hibs’ hopes of landing him look likely to be dashed.

Record Sport understands a return to management in Scotland is not a priority for the 40-year-old who still lives in England.

The former Norwich boss – out of work since leaving Preston in March – is also high on the shortlist to be the next Ipswich Town boss.

It appears Gordon will have to look elsewhere.

Steve Kean, only made head of Hibs’ academy last month, is also among the favourites, as are St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson and former Aberdeen gaffer Derek McInnes.

The Leith faithful will be hoping for a swift appointment, with just nine days until their team face Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup Final.

Ross had hoped to cling on to his job until then in the hope a trophy triumph would spark an upturn in form.

But he got his jotters after Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Livi meant his side had won just four points from the last 28 available.

Unless a new manager can be recruited, it will be left to 2016 Scottish Cup hero David Gray to lead out the team at Hampden. He has been put in caretaker charge and will be assisted by Eddie May and Craig Samson after No.2 John Potter left with Ross.

Confirming the departures, chief executive Ben Kensell said: “Following the prolonged run of poor results in the league, the club has taken the tough decision to relieve Jack Ross of his duties.

“We thank Jack and John for all their hard work and we will fondly remember some incredible highs like reaching two cup finals and finishing third in the league last season.

“The club will now look to appoint a new manager to take the club and this talented young squad forward and a further update will be provided in due course.”
