Kid player Marcus so inspired by homeless

- BY CARL ASKEW

MARCUS RASHFORD has revealed how meeting homeless people on his way to training inspired a determination to help those in need.

The Manchester United and England striker was awarded an MBE for his campaigning work to end child food poverty and support vulnerable families.

The 24-year-old has revealed his strong social conscience was developed as early as seven.

Rashford said: “I grew up in these places. For example, when I went to training, on the way I’d meet so many homeless people. I used to give them a packet of crisps or whatever I had in my packed lunch for training.

“I’d just give them that. I know where help is needed and I’m showing people who should already know where help is needed.”

Rashford forced the UK Government into a U-turn on free school meals for vulnerable children during school holidays and has helped raise millions to tackle social inequality.

But the forward said the system must change, with charity unable to address the issues long term.

Rashford added: “I want to do it the right way.

“People speak about donations but eventually donations will stop.

“Whereas if you create a system that can help and support these children through the early stages of their lives, I think that’s more than possible. I don’t see why we can’t do that.”

Rashford admits he gets a thrill from watching United’s next generation take the same steps he did.

He added: “I was once in their shoes and it makes me happy when I see them starting training with us.

“When they get games it’s a great feeling for me.”
