A movie to Marvel at .. forever
ETERNALS (12) SCOTS actor Richard Madden leads an all-star cast in the latest Marvel movie.
When monstrous entities called Deviants infest the Earth in 5000BC Mesopotamia, an ancient race of beings known as Celestials – led by the mighty Arishem – fashion humanity’s superpowered protectors, the Eternals.
For more than 7000 years, this band of nearimmortal saviours live among us, in plain sight but unseen, led by Ajak (Salma Hayek), who possesses the power of healing. Her dutiful acolytes include Ikaris (Madden), Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Thena (Angelina Jolie).
When a cataclysmic event called the Emergence thaws out frozen Deviants, the Eternals risk everything – including their sworn allegiance to Arishem – to determine mankind’s fate.
Set after Bruce Banner wields the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame, Eternals is the most emotionally intimate Marvel story to date.
Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao’s origin story is an ambitious adaptation of the comic books, including an artfully composed al ◆◆◆◆ fresco sex scene, but some conventions remain, with tantalising scenes in the end credits.
By shifting the focus away from special effectsladen action set pieces and on to character arcs and storytelling, it’s a lovely two-and-a-half hours. ● Stream from Wednesday on Disney+ . From Feb 7 on DVD £17.99/Blu-ray £21.99.
RICK FULTON
The first proper one back was the Exit Festival in Serbia last July. I spoke to David Guetta after it and we were amazed how it felt. There was no noticeable difference in the party. People just want to go out and have a good time. If anything, it feels like it might even be better than before.
Do more collaborations with DJs and there’s going to be a new album. Live, there’ll be lots of gigs in Vegas and Ibiza and many more. It’s going to be a busy year. I can’t wait.
Don’t Wake Me Up is out now. He plays Glasgow Sanctuary on February 4. For tickets and info, go to jonasblue.com
