Cal: Bravery paid off with special goal

-

CALLUM FORDYCE hailed his Airdrie team-mates for having the bravery to put their training-ground moves into practice in their win over Falkirk.

Goals from skipper Fordyce, Scott McGill and Calum Gallagher proved the difference against the Bairns, who netted through Brad McKay and Anton Dowds.

The Diamonds defender broke the deadlock after 35 minutes when he showed a striker’s instinct to sweep home a loose ball.

But he waxed lyrical about their second goal in the 3-2 success that moved them up to second spot after a fifth win on the spin.

Neat play from Adam Frizzell saw him backheel the ball into the path of Dylan Easton and when he threaded the ball through for McGill, the Hearts loanee kept his cool to slot the ball home.

Fordyce said: “Some of the stuff you see in training is ridiculous so we know what the boys are capable of. But to get that in a game is incredible.

“To have the bravery to do it is great. It’s a special goal, a great team goal and Scotty’s finish is a good one.

“I’m not renowned for scoring goals. I’ve been unlucky this season, I’ve had a few off the bar, a couple cleared off the line, so it’s great to get a goal myself, but the three points are more important.

“But I’ve been scoring some crackers in training!”

Bairns boss Martin Rennie saw his side brought back to earth after last week’s 6-2 win over Dumbarton.

He said: “It’s frustrating. But we pushed a good Airdrie team all the way. Our character and our fight

Airdrie 3, Falkirk 2; Alloa 1, Queen’s Park 1; Cove, Montrose 0; Dumbarton 2, East Fife 0; Peterhead 1, Clyde 1 was really good. I’m optimistic we can move this team forward.”

Paul Hartley joked Rory McAllister “wasn’t bad” after his strike helped leaders Cove edge out Montrose 1-0.

Hartley added: “He’s getting better and better with age because he’s looking after himself.”

McAllister struck in the 10th minute with his 16th goal of the season to help Cove move eight points clear at the top.

Dumbarton’s debut boys Josh Oyinsan and Gregg Wylde were both on target in the Sons’ crucial 2-0 victory over East Fife.

Alloa and Queen’s Park drew 1-1 after Connor Smith fired the Spiders into a first half lead but Kevin Cawley restored parity just before the hour.

Peterhead snatched a last-gasp point at home to Clyde. Matthew Elsdon put the Bully Wee in front in the first half but Blue Toon skipper Scott Brown made it 1-1 in stoppage time.
