SCREAM WHEN YOU’RE WINNING
JOY AS TYRE WORKER SCRATCHES OFF £2m But wife feared for their dog’s health
A GRANDAD let out a scream when he won £2million on a scratchcard – but his wife thought there was something wrong with their dog. Sandra and Ian Black got lucky with a National Lottery Monopoly Scratchcard Deluxe last week. But Sandra, 55, who comes from Whitfield in Dundee, was afraid Ian was about to tell her bad news about their beloved pet, Meg. She said: “Ian was coming home from work and nearly never stopped for his newspaper that day.
“He bought a scratchcard and let out a scream before driving home.
“When he came home he started shouting, ‘Get down here, it’s important’, I thought there’s something wrong with Meg.”
Tyre worker Ian, 61, had been driving to their home in Carlisle after a night shift and wondered if it was worth facing the delays caused by roadworks.
He went his usual route anyway and picked up the ticket on the way at a Spar Euro Garage.
Ian, who has five children and 10 grandchildren with
Sandra, has since handed in his notice at Pirelli Tyres.
He said of the lottery card: “Something was just telling me to buy it.
“I went out of the shop and sat and scratched it – I just could not believe what I was seeing.
“I let out a scream and immediately drove home.”
When Sandra looked at the card, she went white and almost fainted.
Ian said: “To think I almost didn’t go into the shop because of the roadworks. I really was so close to just driving past.”
The couple are going to pay for an operation for Meg, a rescued LabradorStaffie crossbreed.
Then they will look for a plot for their “dream home” and help out loved ones.
Ian said: “I don’t think I have even seen that many zeros. I kept questioning, is this really £2million?
“I phoned work and said to them I wouldn’t be in that day, adding, ‘Actually I don’t think I will be in this week, or ever again.’
“You never think it will happen to you. This proves that it does.”
Ian, a Carlisle United fan, also loves rugby and plans to watch plenty of matches.
There will be a new Volvo for Sandra … and a 75in TV for the big matches Ian loves to watch.
He said: “We cannot wait to make the most of our retirement.”
