Proof that Gers Arnie scared of Terminator too

- Fraser Wilson

DORTMUND were missing the Terminator.

Rangers unleashed their Euro Predator to blow apart the Bundesliga big guns and announce their own return to the big stage.

Make no mistake, the Scottish champions produced a blockbuster performance that proved they simply Arnie going to roll over for anyone.

And even if Norwegian striker Erling Haaland – nicknamed after Schwarzenegger’s cyborg soldier – is back for next week’s return, his side could be struggling to find any way back into this tie.

Once again Alfredo Morelos proved his worth as a crucial strike took his tally to 28 in 54 European appearances for Gers – and he had a big hand in another.

Skipper James Tavernier set Gers on their way when he fired home from the spot after VAR spotted a handball.

No one could argue with the result after Morelos’ strike, John Lundstram’s stunning goal and Dan-Axel Zagadou’s own goal.

Ryan Jack, though, perhaps stole the show as he returned to the Euro stage a day short of a year and helped shackle the star-studded Dortmund midfield.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men nullified A-listers Marco Reus and Julian Brandt with their pressing and obliterated the threat of £27million hitman Donyell Malen after a first-half lesson in defending from the impressive Calvin Bassey alongside Connor Goldson.

A stunning goal from the splendid Jude Bellingham and an equally impressive strike from Raphael Guerreiro ensured that the tie isn’t over yet.

But Rangers won’t be complaining. This was their biggest test since their return to the

European fray – and they passed with flying colours.

The security of having Jack beside Lundstram in the holding midfield areas allowed Scott Arfield to join the front three in pressurising Dortmund’s backline.

When the home side found their stride, Gers defended their box comfortably with the excellent Bassey producing a couple of impressive interceptions one on one with Malen.

Rangers made their impressive start count in 36th minute when Zagadou handled Tavernier’s corner in the box and the skipper showed nerves of steel to calmly fire home from 12 yards.

The setback spooked the Germans and within four minutes it was 2-0.

Another Tavernier

This was Rangers’ biggest test since return to European football

corner was flicked on by Joe Aribo and Morelos followed in unmarked at the back post.

Dortmund trudged off at half-time to boos and if they thought it couldn’t get worse they were badly wrong.

Ryan Kent left four men in his wake on the left before feeding Lundstram to fire in a composed finish.

Within 60 seconds Bellingham reduced the deficit but Morelos effort was diverted into his own net by the hapless Zagadou.

But Guerreiro’s superb strike nine minutes from time ensures that Rangers will still have work to do back at Ibrox next week.
