BANNED OLD DUKE OF YORK
And they want his dukedom removed, too
A COUNCIL has voted to strip the Duke of York of his freedom of the city and wants his title removed.
Lib Dem, Labour, Tory, Green and independent councillors joined together yesterday to unanimously pass the motion at York Racecourse.
Members of the public added to the chorus of condemnation of the shamed Duke, 62, granted the freedom of the city in 1987. Labour councillor Aisling Musson claimed it would erase “his stain of an association with this city”.
They insisted that if he fails to act, the Queen or the Government should take away the dukedom.
Lib Dem councillor Darryl Smalley said: “All parties supported this motion and made it clear that it is no longer appropriate for Andrew to represent York. The removal of this title sends the right message that we, as a city, stand with victims.”
Buckingham Palace and a spokesman for the Duke, who paid money to a sex accuser in a civil settlement in February but denies any wrongdoing, declined to comment.
