THE appointment of referee Benoit Bastien could be a good omen for Rangers against Leipzig – because the Frenchman’s never seen a Scottish team lose in Europe.

The 39-year-old has handled three games involving Scottish sides in the same competition and all emerged unscathed. Bastien was in the middle when Celtic beat Sarajevo 1-0 in 2020. He also oversaw Rangers’ 0-0 draw at Legia Warsaw a year earlier, and St Johnstone’s 1-1 draw with Luzern in 2014.
