Queen won’t strip Prince Andrew of his duke title
THE Queen will not strip Prince Andrew of his Duke of York title – despite growing calls to do so.
She will stand by her son and not bow to pressure to pursue “a number of paths” in Parliament, including changing laws, to strip him of the honorary position.
Royal sources have said the monarch “certainly will not” force her son to give up his duke title – given to him by the Queen in 1986.
York Labour MP Rachael Maskell previously said she had met Commons officials to probe ways of forcing Andrew to give up the title.
The move gathered pace in February after the royal’s £12million settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who said he sexually assaulted her when she was 17 in 2001, a claim he denies. Andrew, 62, was dealt another hammer blow on Wednesday when he was stripped of the Freedom of York, given to him in 1987.
Councillors voted overwhelmingly to ditch the duke and “erase his stain of an association with the city”.
They also called for the Queen to remove her son’s title of duke but Palace insiders said she “believes the matter to be settled”.
