Catfish taunt trolls target TikTok star
A WOMAN who posts her make-up transformations online has blasted trolls who have branded her a “catfish”.
Charlotte Rough, 18, has gone viral on TikTok several times since launching her account. But people often criticise the way she looks before putting on make-up and some have accused her of creating a fake identity to lure people into a relationship – known as catfishing. Charlotte, of Airdrie, said: “I receive a lot of criticism and hate over those types of videos.
“I get called a ‘catfish’, which can be very harmful as it’s hinting I can never look as good as I do with make-up on.
“I also experience a lot of ‘you only look good because you have 5000 pounds of make-up on’ – comments which are ridiculous.”
Charlotte, who posts under the username @charlotterough, says the negativity she received took a toll on her mental health.
She added: “I was receiving death threats and thousands of comments calling me ‘ugly’ and ‘fat’. I have now learned to ignore the comments, and there is more love than hate.”
Charlotte, who goes to Coatbridge College, has 74,000 followers on TikTok and is also active on her Instagram account and, despite the attention she gets from trolls, she loves the community she’s founded online.
Speaking about her TikTok success, she said: “I’m over the moon. Social media has always been something I’ve enjoyed. I’ve been watching other make-up artists on the app ‘blow up’ and it was always so intriguing to me, and it’s insane as I’m now one of those people to have multiple videos do extremely well.”
Charlotte is hoping to release her own make-up line with the help of her online community.
She said: “I’d definitely say make-up to me is an art form. I enjoy being sat at my make-up desk and listening to music and just enjoying the process of the before and after.”
