Seven hours’ sleep ‘best to beat ageing’

- BY MARTIN BAGOT reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

SEVEN hours’ sleep a night is best for healthy brain aging, a study claims.

Longer or shorter periods can lead to anxiety, depression and worse overall wellbeing, scientists at Cambridge University discovered.

They questioned 500,000 adults aged between 38 and 73 about sleep patterns and then asked them to perform various cognitive tests.

Seven hours’ sleep was found to be the ideal amount for the brain to rid itself of toxins.

Study group member Prof Barbara Sahakian said: “Good sleep is important at all stages of life but particularly as we age. Finding ways to improve it could be crucial to avoiding cognitive decline.”
