Rare sleeping beauty AC is up for grabs at £70k

-

THIS head-turner is a 1960 AC Greyhound that has been superbly restored after spending more than 40 years being increasingly covered in clutter in a garage.

And now the 2+2 GT coupe, one of only 83 ever built, is set to fetch up to £70,000 when it goes on sale with Silverstone Auctions.

The 125bhp 2.0-litre straight-six Bristolengined machine was found under piles of boxes and junk by the seller in his late father-in-law’s garage.

Bought new, the Greyhound was used as a daily driver – including visits to UK circuits where its owner used to race Aston Martins at club level – until it was put into storage in 1978.

With less than 44,000 miles on the clock, the car has received a £21,000 engine rebuild, allowing it to run on unleaded fuel, from specialist Ian Nuttall.

It’s also been given a shiny red paint finish in as close a match as possible to the original colour, while the bumpers have been rechromed and are ready to be fitted – but are currently off as the vendor prefers the smoother bumperless styling.

Much of the interior, which includes leather seating, appears to have been refitted, with slight signs of use by its long-term owner, while the red carpets are brand new.

Provided with a full history, original handbooks and tool kit, the Greyhound will no doubt fetch a huge amount of interest at the sale at Sywell Aerodrome, Northamptonshire, on May 28.

Harry Fox-Edwards, of Silverstone Auctions, said: “Our vendor says the engine is running well and the car is a delight to drive. This has got to be one of the finest examples of a Greyhound to come to market recently.”
