Disgraceful PM let down country

-

THE monarch was not able to deliver the Queen’s Speech yesterday and her son Charles had to step in to deliver the Government’s plan for the coming year.

But that was far from the most remarkable thing about this out-of-theordinary Queen’s Speech. The strangest thing about yesterday’s Westminster event was that in the midst of a cost-ofliving catastrophe not one thing was announced to help struggling families.

The freighter-load of 38 bills showed a government that has no focus and a Prime Minister who has completely missed the priorities facing the country.

Boris Johnson thought he could whip up support across the country by announcing an end to EU red tape – a so-called Brexit bonus.

But all this will do is water down workers’ rights at the very time when ordinary families will need to fight for better wages to cope with inflation, energy costs and tax rises.

With a recession looming, there was nothing in the programme to address the biggest challenge facing families up and down the country. There is nothing left in the Tory tank. The cost-of-living crisis is only going to get worse in the months ahead and Johnson has no answer.

Everyone from supermarket bosses to energy companies agree the country needs a windfall tax on the massive profits of oil giants to deliver some relief for consumers at the very least. Instead, the Prime Minister is putting his hands over his ears and doing nothing.

He is taking a gamble that the economy will right itself in time for an election and improve household budgets.

But in the meantime it is working families across the country who will pay the price for Johnson’s incompetence.
