Designer hoping to dazzle TV judges

- BY HEATHER GREENAWAY

FASHION designer Yong-Chin Marika Breslin is hoping to brush away the competition and become the first Scots winner of Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up star.

The 25-year-old, from Partick, Glasgow, who is a self-taught make-up artist, is hoping to dazzle the judges with her facepaint wizardry in the new series of the hit BBC reality show.

Yong-Chin, who has a degree in fashion design, will go brushto-brush with nine other budding MUAs as they battle it out to be crowned the best in Britain.

The former swimming champ says the support she received from eccentric judges Val Garland and Dominic Skinner has been invaluable.

Yong-Chin, whose outlandish and daring make-up style has landed her lots of fashion magazine editorials, said: “I loved every minute of my time on the show although it was hard work and extremely tough at times.

“I applied to go on last year. I got to the final stage of the audition process but didn’t make the cut. The producers asked me to come back this year but I was a bit unsure and left applying to the very last minute. I auditioned and made it into the final ten. I’m ever so glad I went for it.”

The former Hillhead High School pupil, who is also a big fan of host Maya Jama, added: “I just loved all the people on the show. I’ve made some lifelong friends in the other contestants, and the judges were incredible. They are both very eccentric. I have idolised Val for years. They both gave constructive criticism and pushed us all to be better artists. They really cared about us all and got emotional about our work.

“Maya was fantastic too. She was really funny, friendly, chatty and personable.”

The 10 aspiring make-up artists are tested by leading industry experts in varied high-stakes assignments. Each week the two MUAs who least impress series judges go head-to-head in a Face Off elimination.

After eight weeks, the winner is crowned Britain’s Next Make-up Star, winning a contract assisting some of the world’s top make-up artists.

Glow Up, BBC Three at 8pm tonight.
