HIBS hope to appoint a new boss by the end of the week, with Lee Johnson and Jon Dahl Tomasson in a two-way battle to replace Shaun Maloney.

The Easter Road club signed off from a miserable campaign with a 4-0 thumping of St Johnstone yesterday, as Hull loanee James Scott bagged a second-half hat-trick.

Attention now turns fully to finding a new boss to lead a summer rebuild of the club.

Owner Ron Gordon and chief executive Ben Kensell completed the interview process last week after a lengthy hunt across Europe.

Former Sunderland and Bristol City boss Johnson remains favourite although there’s strong backing for ex-Malmo manager Tomasson within the support.

Record Sport revealed at the weekend that Johnson has agreed terms in principle but, like the 40-year-old, Tomasson has also come through a second interview and is under serious consideration.

The former Denmark international, who has also been assistant at Vitesse and of the Danish national team, helped mastermind Malmo’s Champions League defeat of Rangers last summer.

Caretaker David Gray took charge of his fifth and final game against Saints yesterday.

He admits he wants a role in the new set-up having been first team coach under Maloney and his predecessor Jack Ross.

Gray said: “That will be decided by the new manager and the direction the club wants to go in.

“Myself and Eddie May were asked to do a job until the end of the season which is now done.

“I’m comfortable with the situation in terms of where I want to be. I love working for the club, I really care about it, so given the opportunity I would be desperate to stay.”
