I wish we wouldn’t Dee that
DUNDEE and manager Mark McGhee left the Premiership with a whimper as they crashed to defeat to Livingston.
Assistant Dave Mackay admits the Dark Blues must now get things right as they aim to come back with a bang in the Championship.
They took the lead with Josh Mulligan’s second-half header but they way they let that slip away in the closing stages summed up a dismal Premiership campaign.
With relegation confirmed last week, there was nothing beyond pride at stake.
But the bigger question now is what happens next as Gordon Strachan takes on a director of football role and the hunt begins for a younger manager to spark life into the team for a promotion bid.
Mackay said: “We’re all in for meetings [on Monday]. At the minute, I’m just disappointed we couldn’t finish on a high.
“There will be some people moving on, others staying.
“But it’s a chance now for the club to rebuild to make sure the next time we get back to the Premiership, in hopefully a year’s time, it is in a much better place to sustain it.
“The club will work through a process and will have plenty of good candidates.
“Ultimately, it is a big decision for the club and they need to make sure we get the right one in.”
Defeat leaves Dundee with just six league wins all season, with only one of those coming on McGhee’s watch.
Mackay added: “It summed up our season where we are comfortable enough in the lead but, all of a sudden, five minutes later you are 2-1 down.
“There wasn’t much at stake today but it was a similar performance to the rest of the campaign. Attitude and application has never been an issue. The staff and players have given it their all but ultimately we’ve come up short.”
