WE’RE SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

PROUD dad Russell Fitzpatrick reckons the family should pack their bags and move to Boston after son Matt’s amazing Brookline triumph.

The Sheffield star sealed an incredible New England double as he added the US Open crown to the US Amateur title he won on the same course in 2013.

Dad Russell said: “We were happy when he won the silver medal at the Open Muirfield in 2013. We are really happy when he won the US Amateur.

“I can’t believe he’s won this at the same venue. It’s a really special place. We’ve stayed with the same family, we love Boston. We are moving here next year!

“It’s been fabulous. It’s a really special place.”

The Fitzpatrick family were all inside the ropes to witness the incredible victory – although brother Alex had to make a mad dash back.

The 22-year-old, who turned pro this month, said: “It was nice to share those moments with our family and close friends. It made the day. I really did fly home on Saturday. I live in North Carolina and when I left the course he was four back –then when I landed, two hours later, he was in a tie for the lead and in the last group again.

“I thought, ‘I’m going back, I ain’t missing this’. So I got a flight booked at 8am. Had to get up at 5am but it was worth it. Cost me $160. I reckon Matt might reimburse me!”

The younger sibling was offered big bucks to join the controversial LIV Golf series but the pair of them turned the Saudis down.

Alex said: “It reinforces to me that I made the right decision with LIV. It was money being thrown at me, more money than I could comprehend but what was the risk?

“Matt’s win has just highlighted to me why I practice so hard every day. It’s about the dream not money, although the money is very nice. Matt helped me make my choice, along with my parents. This just shows we made the right call.”
